The Diversity Immigrant Visa, or visa lottery is a unique program run by the U.S. Department of State as part of the Immigration Act. The purpose of the program is to diversity the immigrants of the United States by provind opportunity to natives of countries with historically low rates of immigration. The annual program gives away 50,000 visas by random computer generated drawing. For this year, natives of all countries except Bangladesh, Brazil, Canada CHina, Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador, Great Britain, Haiti, India, Jamaica, Mexico, Pakistan, Peru, Philippines, South Korea and Vietnam can apply. Guatemala is a new country on the list this year. There is no age limit. To be eligible, a person must have completed high school, and meet all immigrant visa requirements (health, criminal background, security risk) but need not be petitioned by an employer or relative.
Applcations must be made online between October 2nd and November 3rd, 2012.
